How Linen is Made

  • Cultivating Flax – Linen begins with the cultivation of flax, a plant that grows best in cooler, damp climates. It requires minimal pesticides and fertilisers, making it an eco-friendly crop.
  • Harvesting – Once the flax is ready, the plants are pulled from the ground rather than cut. This keeps the fibers intact, ensuring longer, stronger threads.
  • Retting – After harvesting, the flax is retted—a process where the stalks are soaked in water to break down the pectin that binds the fibers. This can be done naturally using dew or water.
  • Breaking and Scutching – After retting, the flax stalks are broken, and the woody parts are removed through a process called scutching. This leaves behind the valuable fibers used to make linen.
  • Combing and Spinning – The flax fibers are then combed to align them and remove any short, coarse strands. The long fibers are spun into yarn, which will later be woven into fabric.
  • Weaving and Finishing – The linen yarn is woven into fabric, and the finished product is often treated to soften the texture and increase comfort. High-quality linen may undergo additional washes to give it its luxurious feel.
